While the list deals almost exclusively with on-page factors, another crucial element in increasing website conversion is increasing the quality of traffic that is driven to a site. Without quality or qualified traffic, even good navigation and effective site search will do little good in persuading the wrong visitor to take the right action. If one follows this school of thought, not only are conversions increased, but media costs are decreased and – wham – you’ve got higher volume at a lower cost per action.

GREAT point NYC. In my experience, AdWords is one of the best sources of high quality traffic for most lead-gen applications.

Really nice and useful tips. Traffic without conversion is useless. This is one fundamental aspect of marketing that some people neglect.

Certainly both qualified traffic and good conversion practices are needed to make the whole thing work. It’s a good article, though a bit brief. I think there’s a lot more going on “under the hood” of each of his points. At the risk of sounding spammy, I wrote a related article a while back about some of the top conversion problems that can occur just in the shopping cart portion of an e-commerce site/application:

This is a great list. Most marketers already know that info, but it is great to provide it to my friends who are just beginning. Thanks for this.

Good points. I particularly like the one about WAP/mobile sites. With more people using devices like the iPhone or even any of the newer WinMo or Symbian variants, it would be good to pay attention to the mobile aspect of a site.

I wrote an article about website conversion and how to improve it from a copy point of view. We deal with businesses of all sizes and it’s always amazing to see how fundamental things like readable copy and Calls to Action are overlooked, even when an entire marketing team is in place.
