Online Advertising Still Robust But Growth Flattening

February 23, 2009 on 10:25 am | In Advertising, News | 5 Comments

Welcome back! Good to see you. If you haven't seen it, here's the archive of my best writing. Thanks for visiting!

Here are some recent stats that give a quick snapshot of the Australian online media landscape (data from this report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau of Australia).

Exhibit A: Online advertising spend grew 27% from 2007 to 2007

Exhibit B: Compare Q4 2007 with Q4 2008 and you’ll note a healthy 22% increase.

Exhibit C: Now take a look at a comparison of Q3 2008 with Q4 2008 – growth is still positive, but it’s slowed to just 2% (an annualised rate of 8%).

Conclusion: there’s still plenty of activity online and advertisers are still spending money to make money.  But as competition for customers hots up, renewed focus on testing and tracking ROI is essential.

  1. How much of an impact do you think the current “economic crisis” had for the Q3 v Q4 2008 results? More and more people are starting to spend less, without realizing that marketing is the one thing they need to spend more on during a recession if they expect to survive.

  2. I’m not exactly sure, but it’s clear that the trend is levelling out. It will be interesting to compare Q4 08 vs Q1 09…

  3. Well the Internet advertising total spend will grow 11% of the total market. The companies will spend less on print media and radio. The researcher (read in an article) says that Online media will increace in coming year more fast as compare to other media. Many offline magazines are now planning to move 100% online.

  4. wow i think this is due to the crisis because a drop from 22 to 2% seems pretty intense

  5. While the crisis in horrible, people need to not stop spending their money, but allocate it in different directions. Online advertising should be a priority… Its cheaper than many other methods and in my opinion a lot more effective that other more expensive alternative.

Thank you for the information, i found it interesting to read.
