Beating Economic Blues Requires Upgraded Mental Software

Anders Sorman-Nilsson from Thinque wrote a very thought provoking blog post this morning that struck a chord with me. In Australia as in most countries right now, the government is throwing cash at everyone almost everyone in a bid to “stimulate” us out of the recession.
Says Anders (emphasis added by me):
I believe people out there are genuinely scared, and they need strong leadership. Leadership that is inspirational, certain, innovative, creative – even funky! Leadership that declares that ‘we will make it through this’. Leadership that says, ‘hey, we have enjoyed 17 years of unprecedented economic growth, we are currently experiencing a slow-down, but we need to upgrade our thinking, our marketing, our positioning, our universities to ensure we get back on the right track.’Strong leadership is not just ’stimulus packages’. Does anybody feel ’stimulated’ by the logical, analytical number-crunching administration talk of hand-outs?

No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it - Einstein
Handouts without inner change will be spent in less than a month, to be replaced by inevitable fear because “we tried and it didn’t work”.

Whole economy is facing such kind of problem. People do not know how to tackle this. Suddenly every thing has changed. I saw few videos where people were showing their happy life and now.
I do not know when this is going to change.

Will, I completely agree with the comments – Last handouts given just before X’mas saw a big boost at the Pokies / TAB. I won’t be surprised if it happens again this time around.
Also the biggest question will be how long can a Society depend on handouts and who’s going to pay for these.
If we (as individuals) take responsibility for our lives / financial situations we will never go anywhere productive.
There are Software Upgrades available in the form of books – and has been available for a long time – like Napolean Hill, David Schwartz, etc.
Hope we see a small portion of these handouts being used to purchase these timeless books to help grow us!

We need more than handouts to get us through this recession

I think there must be a better way to get us through all this. Economic problems like this have been going on throughout history. I guess we should have learned from past mistakes.

As we throw money at the problem, we are creating more debt. The thing about that is that they are creating another problem (more deficit) and praying that they will fix the original problem and the new one they just created. What to do then? Dunno. I can say that I don’t envy people in their positions right about now.

@Ananda – thanks for your thoughtful commentary. I too hope that people will invest in upgrading their knowledge / skills / resources in order to make the best of the stimulus plan (I note that the Senate has just passed it BTW).

I absolutely agree with Anders statement: “we need to upgrade our thinking, our marketing, our positioning, our universities”.

Yeah we should have done this bit earlier because this was due early. I mean if we were enjoying the success from past 17 years than how we can be wrong in just few months.
This clearly showing that we should take this step before two years. But any way its not too late yet and we will overcome from this as well.

More debt is not the answer. Fiscal responsibility is.

This idea of throwing around money to stimulate the economy is a good idea in theory but you really have to regulate it. A good example was that bailout based in the US months ago which ended up costing 9.7 Trillion. None of the money helped anyone out except bankers and friends of the bill passers.

@Dan — too true. The effect is temporary at best. A great resource that gives insight into the “real story” is Jim Sinclair’s http://www.jsmineset.com.
